This is the first of the three ‘Somme’ pieces I created to commemorate the Battle of the Somme. As with the other two – ‘1916-October’ and ‘1916-November’ – I wanted to communicate the sense of splintering and scarring that occurred not only across the ground that was fought over but within the minds and bodies of those who were caught up in the violence. I’ve added texture with pieces of grit and lumps of earth and crushed charcoal. I’ve also worked to create a sense of upheaval by gouging the painted surface with a knife.
