The making of this work involved what is known as ‘Sgraffito’ from the Italian ‘to scratch’. The technique is literally just that: scratching through layers of dried paint with a blade down to previously-applied colours. It can’t be planned; there’s really no knowing what will emerge which is part of the excitement of doing it.
The title is a line from the Robert Frost poem, ‘Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening.’
